In the Fall of 2005, I had just started my psychometric journey at a global personality assessment firm headquartered in Princeton, New Jersey. On my first day of work, the nearest cubicle neighbor requested to see a copy of my personal attributes graph. After 3 seconds of examining my scores, she proclaimed, "You're crazy. You'll fit right in!".
Fast forward to mid-March 2020, and like many others, I found myself without a job and searching for my next gig. Having spent the most recent eight years based in Downtown Chicago, and being Canadian with an H-1B work visa, I now had 60 days to exit the U.S. After 15 years and thousands of assessments helping determine what motivated others in their jobs, I ironically had to turn my analysis inward with the classic question, "What am I passionate about?"
Since last March, I have moved back to my hometown of Halifax, Nova Scotia, connected with family and old friends, completed a business analytics program, and launched my new consulting company, Data Driven Talent. I find myself with the rare opportunity to hit the 'Reinvention Button' mid-career. Allowing the tiny voice in the back of my mind to become louder, "Start your own consulting company!"
Making the jump from 'Unemployed' to 'Self-Employed' can be both an exciting and terrifying experience all-in-one. Now with my mind, heart, and soul focused, I am completely driven to find better ways to use data within the talent management space. I/O Psychology and Data Science: these are the building blocks of Data Driven Talent. To anyone else that may be thinking about venturing out on your own, listen to your inner voice and follow your heart.
"When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy." -Rumi
